Honduras Medical Brigade – A Missionary’s Reflection

This past week felt like stepping into God’s own story, as we, the Honduras Mission Team served countless people (1,500) through a 2-day medical brigade in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
Each morning, both the volunteers and church members rose early, some as early as 6 a.m., with a mix of anticipation, nerves, and joy. By 7 a.m., the church building was already coming to life with children laughing, families resting in the shade, and the team of volunteers bustling with adrenaline as they prepared to offer care.

The makeshift clinic was set up inside the local church and out under a large tree, with a few tents scattered across the green space. Doctors, dentists, and nurses unpacked their tools and organized their supplies, while the vision team readied their stations outside, combining traditional eye charts with something special, children’s bibles. It was a humbling sight to watch a child, parent, or grandparent try on a pair of glasses for the first time and exclaim, “I can finally read my Bible!” Those words made the entire trip so worth it for the team.

Meanwhile, the other half of the mission team worked diligently behind the scenes, cleaning and sterilizing dental instruments and serving alongside the medical staff. They assisted with triage, administered injections, and ensured patients received the correct medications as needed. Other missionaries were part of the evangelism team, and throughout the 2-day medical brigade, they prayed with countless people, listened to their stories, and shared the love and hope of Jesus with them. At the same time, others on our team served with the children’s ministry, playing with the little ones, and keeping them engaged and happy while their families were called to be seen. Together, these teams worked hand in hand, making sure every person felt cared for, valued, and deeply loved. In every role, each person became an instrument of God’s grace and healing.

Throughout the day, we saw people arrive nonstop, some walked for miles, others arrived with children in their arms, and many came leaning on a cane or a friend. Each person was met with compassion, prayer, and dignity. The doctors and dentists treated every patient as if they were the most important person in the world because in God’s eyes, they truly are important. They are loved by God, seen by Him, and on this mission trip, we got to be part of that love in action. The care receive by all volunteers weren’t just medical treatments, they were encounters with God’s love, moments where His grace came to life through the hands and hearts of ordinary people.

At one point, a local news crew arrived. They began interviewing patients and volunteers, capturing the joy and transformation happening all around us. When they asked some of our team members why they came to Honduras, the answer was simple, “Because Jesus would. We just get to be His hands and feet for a little while.
